“I can dream too” ~ Jumping Spiders

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

Ecologist Daniel Rößler, from the University of Konstanz, journeyed to the remote Brazilian Amazon. Her interest arose from observing little arachnids snoozing. They dangled from a thread of silk with legs curled, jerking as if in the throes of revery. She said the way they twitched made her think of dogs and cats dreaming. She published an article on August 8th, 2022, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, which revealed that jumping spiders experience a state similar to sleep with rapid eye movements similar to those observed in humans while they dream.

Another team of universities in Germany, Italy, and the US observed arachnids during nighttime inactivity by using infrared cameras. They found similar findings, periodic bouts of retinal movement paired with twitching of limbs and common leg curling. They concluded given the regularity of twitches and leg curling and their co-occurrence combined with retinal movements that both activities were different expressions of the sleeplike phase.
