In a special ceremony conducted on the 5th of September, the Manchester Museum returned 174 heritage artefacts to the Aboriginal Anindilyakwa Community, situated in Australia’s Northern territory.
The artefacts were shipped to Britain when Captain James Cook returned aboard the HMB Endeavour in 1771, and have remained there ever since.

The museum worked with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) as well as the Anindilyakwa Land Council over three years to determine where the collection should be located to best educate and inspire future generations.
